Samford University will observe International Education Week Nov. 18–22 with special presentations, movies and events representing different parts of the world.
Each day will focus on a special region to celebrate the various cultures represented by the Samford community, said Samford director of international education Angela D. Ferguson. The geographic areas of emphasis are:
Nov. 18 — Latin America and the Caribbean, with salsa lessons and a 5:30 p.m. talk on mining practices in Columbia
Nov. 19 — Africa and the Middle East
Nov. 20 — Asia, with a program, “The Real China,” that will include an introduction to Chinese culture and lessons on painting Chinese characters and preparing dumplings and other traditional Chinese treats
Nov. 21 — Europe, featuring servings of German coffee and cake
Nov. 22 — North America
Throughout the week, displays on Ben Brown Plaza will provide information on international trips and events that are available to students. Other programs, including movies and speakers, will be held at 7 p.m.
The effort is a collaboration of Ferguson’s office and the Samford office of international student development, the International Student Leadership Council, the department of world languages and cultures, and other groups that promote languages and cultures. International Education Week is a national initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State.
