Samford to host basketball camps

Summer is almost here, and it’s time to think about summer camps.

Samford University’s head women’s basketball coach Janet Cone is planning several camps for basketball players in June and July to suit almost every level of player. Here is a list of upcoming camps:

-Day camp, June 12-15; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; grades 3-8.

-Team camp, June 12-15; 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; junior varsity, high school and Amateur Athletic Union teams.

-Fun and fundamental camp, June 16-17; 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; grades 1-6.

-Shooting camp, June 16-17; 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; grades 7-12.

-Overnight camp, July 28-30; grades 7-12; basketball/Bible study for Christian players.

Cone, a native of Summerville, S.C., graduated from Furman University where she lettered in basketball, softball and field hockey.

Her first coaching job was at a high school in South Carolina where she coached basketball, track and field and tennis.

She finished her master’s degree in physical education at the University of South Carolina in 1986.

Hired in the fall of 1996 as the first head coach for Samford women’s basketball, Cone has more than 18 years experience as a head coach with basketball camps and clinics.

She coached at Mars Hill (N.C.) College, helping the school to move to Division 2.

She is active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Project “Hoop” and a member of Hunter Street Baptist Church, Hoover.
