There is a product so good it can’t be improved upon. What is it?

The gospel, of course.

But the way it is packaged could be improved, said Ed Landers, director of the media center at Samford University’s Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies.

So Samford, in partnership with The Alabama Baptist, is hosting the Live Audio Workshop May 22–23 in Orlean Bullard Beeson Hall on the university’s campus in Birmingham.

“We are seeing such a need for somebody to teach people the basics,” Landers said. “People volunteer at churches and we want people to be able to do a good job.”

To help teach these volunteers, music ministers and audio visual technicians everything they need to know about audio, sound and stage aesthetics in the “digital age,” Landers and Jordan Meggs, director of art and media for the school of education and professional studies, are bringing in audio experts Brad Brooks and B.J. Vail of Cullman-based Backstage Productions.

From the basics of how electricity works to more advanced topics like setting wireless frequencies and audio wiring, the workshop will address how to establish proper sound variations for both contemporary and traditional worship services.

In addition to group sessions on audio processes, Brooks and Vail will lead beginner and advanced breakout sessions on those topics with “a lot of detail,” Meggs explained.

“This way, depending on your skill level, you won’t be too far over your head,” he said.
