Scholarship endowed to honor Judson alumna

Gary and Beverly Hollister, of Draper, Utah, have established a scholarship at Judson College in honor of Beverly Hollister’s mother, the late Claudine Spencer Anderson.

Anderson, who died in 1984, was a native of Marion. She taught English at Francis Marion High School in Marion before beginning her career at Judson, where she served as registrar, assistant librarian, director of alumnae affairs and assistant professor of English. She conducted some 15 study tours to Europe, taking Judson students during their spring break.

Anderson earned her bachelor’s degree from Judson and her master’s degree from the University of Alabama, where she also did study toward her doctorate.

She married Paul B. Anderson in 1941. He was employed in the insurance industry for 32 years and served several terms as Marion mayor. He remains a member of Marion First United Methodist Church and the Marion Lions Club and is a Master Mason.

The Claudine Spencer Anderson Scholarship will be awarded for the first time in the next academic year. Guidelines specify that the scholarship will be awarded to Judson students on the basis of scholarship, character, need and worthiness.

“Judson College is very grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Hollister for the establishment of the generous scholarship,” said Judson President David Potts. “It will not only help worthy young women but also honors the memory of a highly esteemed alumna and devoted faculty member.” (JC)
