School of Education Chosen for Pilot Program

The University of Mobile (UM) school of education is one of five teacher education programs in Alabama selected to participate in a pilot program to certify student teachers in the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI).

This is the first time that student teachers will have the opportunity to receive training from state consultants and certification in the statewide K–12 initiative that teaches educators proven and effective ways to teach reading.
Previously the training had only been offered to teachers who have already graduated from college and are currently employed in public schools.

The Alabama State Department of Education will have consultants at UM Aug. 18–22 to train elementary and secondary student teachers in ARI. Twenty-one student teachers in the last semester of their senior year are being trained in the pilot program at UM.

Other schools selected for the pilot program are the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Troy University, Athens State University and Jacksonville State University.
