Lewis Self is someone you should know because he was recently recognized for more than 50 years of service as a deacon at Coldwater Baptist Church in Oxford.
Q: Why have you served as a deacon for more than five decades?
A: When you are ordained a deacon it is supposed to be for life.
Q: What does the role demand?
A: It demands a lot of you — a lot of time and a lot of different things.
Q: What do you get from serving as a deacon?
A: It is hard to explain what you get. You get a lot of help and it proves what kind of Christian you are.
Q: What led you to become a deacon?
A: Several of the men and the pastor we had at that time did a lot of talking to me and convinced me.
Q: How do other family members support you in your role as a deacon?
A: They have been real supportive. Both of my girls are Christians and they both go to church. One of my grandsons is a deacon and one of my sons-in-law is a deacon.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in this activity in the future?
A: Because of my health, I’ve asked them to take me off the active list and put me on the inactive list. We still go to church regularly. I still help however I can.
