In less than a month all of America will be memorializing the most tragic day in recent United States history – Sept. 11.
On that day last year people world-wide stood still in disbelief as terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and attempted to hit the nation’s capital.
Churches and associations across the state plan to hold special ceremonies to mark the first anniversary of what has become known as 9-11.
Birmingham Baptist Association (BBA) plans to lead the effort in Alabama by partnering with Baptist Health System, Cox radio and Fox 6 News. Supported by Mayor Bernard Kincaid, this event will be the official Birmingham ceremony.
The Sept. 11 event will be held at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex from 6 to 7 p.m. and will be carried live on Fox 6 and all six Cox Radio stations. Doors open at 4:50 p.m. and preservice music will begin at 5 p.m. Seating capacity is 15,000.
‘Salute to Heroes’
Ricky Creech, BBA director of missions, said Birmingham’s “Salute to Heroes” will be one of the largest ceremonies in the nation. “We will have a direct linkup with CNN,” he said.
Plans are to have a New York police officer and fireman on hand to speak as well as Alabamian Roy Williams, whose brother Maj. Dwayne Williams was killed in the Pentagon crash. Gov. Don Siegelman will also be present.
Music will be provided by multiple church choirs, the Magic City Boys Choir and the Singing Flag, which will be presented by Clearview Baptist Church, Pinson. The Singing Flag holds a 110-voice choir and full orchestra and is similar to the Living Christmas Tree/
“There are only 13 of these flags in the nation,” Creech said. “This may be the biggest event in the Southeast. It has exceeded all our expectations and the city’s as well.
Creech said BBA currently needs male and female volunteers to be ushers for the event. Also needed are churches to host the program guests –air fare, hotel and meals.
