Shelby Association pastor, former DOM retires

Since his Dec. 31, 2006, retirement from Ryan Baptist Church, Montevallo, in Shelby Baptist Association, Pastor John Duncan has been making plans to once again visit the association’s churches — much as he did from 1962 until 1988 as director of missions (DOM). "I would like to see them and renew old acquaintances and see how the churches have prospered through the years," Duncan said. In his 55 years in the ministry, Duncan served several Baptist churches, was DOM for St. Clair Baptist Association and helped to establish the DOM position in Randolph Baptist Association. While in Shelby Association, he served as interim pastor for several churches, many of which he would like to visit now that his Sundays are free.

"I’ve been impressed with his character and … the practical wisdom that he has," said current Shelby Association DOM Hugh Richardson. He noted that Duncan laid a solid ministry foundation for the association that is influencing the work there even today.

Duncan, a native of Tennessee, was called to the ministry in his 20s. He holds degrees from Temple Baptist Seminary in Chattanooga, Tenn.; Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham; and took classes from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
