Curtis Jackson has served as mayor of Autaugaville for 24 years and as council member for 12 years. At Autaugaville Baptist Church he serves as treasurer, trustee, deacon and president of the men’s Sunday School class. In addition, he manually rings the church bell every Sunday morning as he has done for more than 35 years.
Q: What led you to the mayor’s office?
A: While I was council member the mayor moved out of town. So I wound up serving as mayor pro tem. It was my task to become mayor after he left and we haven’t had any opposition to that position since.
Q: Why have you done this activity?
A: After I retired from working for the federal government, I had a desire to continue to serve the public.
Q: Do you consider this position a ministry?
A: Yes. I have an opportunity to minister to people every day.
With the water and sewer problems that we work with it helps to do a lot of praying to cope with the problems.
Q: What does this ministry demand?
A: With customers and new people coming into town I have an opportunity to invite them to church and go back and welcome them as a member of the FAITH team and invite them to our church.
Q: What do you get from the ministry?
A: I get a lot of self-satisfaction. You feel you are helping people. Every time we welcome people, it is an opportunity to touch lives.
