Leon Adamson, 95, has been at the same church since she was 17. Until recently, the Montevallo native helped with the Wednesday night activities of her church’s ministry to children. She also assisted in more than 50 years of Vacation Bible Schools and was involved in the women’s ministry at her church. Adamson is known for making Scripture-embossed needlepoint crosses and giving them away to others. Once she made 100 of them in three weeks for grandson Andy Birchfield to take to a foreign country.
Q: What influences in your life pointed you to Christ at the beginning of your faith journey?
A: Having a Christian mother and daddy and going to church; they carried their children to church. Before I married, I went to a church in Calera with a group. The lady that was with us … asked each one … to raise our hand and say, “The Lord is my Shepherd.” … And that is when I made the Lord my Shepherd.
Q: When and how were you led into your ministry work?
A: By going to my church and being involved in everything my church was (doing). I felt like it was a ministry to make crosses … and help others to believe.
Q: What does your ministry work demand?
A: I believe in serving the Lord. I always have. Making the crosses when I am by myself is a joy.
Q: What do you get from your ministry work?
A: The joy of making them and giving them to other people.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: I will try to make some crosses every day. I will make them as long as my hands hold out.
Q: What difference will this ministry work make for you in the future?
A: I would like to influence other people to know the Lord as their personal Savior. That is what my intentions would be, to help other people know the Lord as their Savior.
Q: What difference has Jesus Christ made in your life?
A: He made the biggest difference that could be made. I know Him as my personal Savior. … I want to let others know that I am a Christian and to help others know the Lord and Savior.
