At 90 years old, Lois Wilson is the oldest-living member of New Salem Baptist Church, New Site. Over the years, she has served in various capacities in the church. Currently she serves on the history committee and visits the local nursing home and hospital each month.
Q: What is your earliest memory of the church?
A: I grew up in Opp, and my earliest memory is my daddy walking with me to Sunday School on Sunday morning.
Q: What are other special memories you have of church?
A: I was saved as a teenager at brush arbor revival. The men cut trees, put posts up and then laid saplings across it and piled brush on top of it to make shade. Then they cut blocks of trees and nailed a plank to the blocks and made benches for the arbor.
Q: What church ministries have you been involved in over the years?
A: I taught the 4- and 5-year-old Sunday School class for about 30 years. That was a special thing. I just enjoyed it. Now it’s great to see some of the children I taught and their families still in church.
Q: What has church meant to you through the years?
A: It has always been a big part of my life. I just feel close to the Lord when I go to church, and I feel like I am witnessing to my family and the children in the church that it’s important to go to church.
Q: What difference will church make for you in the future?
A: I just hope that my family remembers that about me enough that they will be involved in church forever.
