New Friendship Baptist Church, Somerville, honored Pastor Tommy Smothers and wife Cathy on Sept. 20 for their 25 years of “faithfulness” in service to the Morgan Baptist Association church.
The church presented Smothers with a love offering and plaque commemorating his anniversary.
Numerous friends and former church members joined the congregation for the special service, including Pastor Randy Berry, of Nettleton, Miss., who surrendered to preach under Smothers’ pastorate; former Minister of Music Ricky Crow; and Mike Griffith, pastor of Grant’s Creek Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, and longtime friend, who opened the service with a trumpet solo of “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.”
“What I admire most about Brother Tommy is his passion for the lost and the fact that he always preaches the Truth,” said Deacon Gary Knotts Sr., who was saved in 2001 after Smothers introduced his son to Christ about eight years earlier. “He’s a God-fearing man and he doesn’t just talk it; he walks it. … I can’t tell you how much he’s affected my life. He taught me about worship and about being in the Word every day.”
A native of Gordo, Smothers previously served as pastor of Highland Baptist Church, Clanton; Pine Grove Baptist Church, Ethelsville; Springhill Baptist Church, Carrollton; and interim pastor of Flatwoods Baptist Church, Gordo, where he had surrendered to the ministry at age 17. He also was ordained in Texas and served as pastor of his first church there.
Smothers is a graduate of Samford University in Birmingham and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and an Air Force veteran. He and his wife have two children and two grandchildren, with one more on the way.
