Southern Baptist leader James Dunn dies at 83

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina — James Dunn, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee (BJC) on Public Affairs from 1981 to 1999, died July 4, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was 83.

Prior to leading the church-state organization, now called Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, Dunn had served 12 years as director of the Christian Life Commission of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. A native of Fort Worth, Dunn served as a pastor, campus minister and college teacher before serving with BJC. He earned bachelor of divinity and doctor of theology degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. 

After retirement Dunn taught Christianity and public policy at Wake Forest University’s divinity school in Winston-Salem until 2014. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn.
