Southern Baptist named Air Force chief chaplain

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Chaplain Brig. Gen. Charles Baldwin, a Southern Baptist, has been promoted to the Chief of Chaplain Service for the U.S. Air Force. Effective in June, Baldwin will become a major general and one of the three highest ranking chaplains in the United States military.

Baldwin, the son of an Air Force chaplain, graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., in 1977 with a master of divinity degree. He is a member of Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, Va. As chief of chaplains, Baldwin will be senior pastor of a combined active-duty, guard, reserve and civilian force of more than 850,000 people serving in about 1,300 locations worldwide.
