The staff of The Alabama Baptist, under the direction of Editor Bob Terry, recently garnered nine national awards for work published in 2003.
Coverage of the memorial service held for slain Alabama missionary Martha Myers captured the most attention with two top awards. The story written by Managing Editor Jennifer Davis Rash earned an Award of Excellence from Associated Church Press (ACP) and captured first place from Baptist Communicators Association (BCA).
Judges said, “I like this story. Maybe it’s the powerful quotes or the interesting and moving narration. Maybe it’s the neutral tone and how the reporter refrained from inflammatory language and maudlin clichés. Or maybe it was the detail that captured this person as a human face, as well as covered all the bases.”
Rash’s story also was part of a 19-part series put together by the International Mission Board, “Yemen: A Tribute of Remembrance,” that won first place from BCA in “Online: Interpretative Reporting/Series or Package.”
Also bringing home a first place award from BCA was Erin Webster with her photo “In Remembrance of Me,” which depicted the Lord’s Supper.
The judges said, “Excellent. The composition and color reinforces the mood.”
Webster also earned an honorable mention from BCA for her feature story “Watching the War,” which followed one Alabama Baptist family’s life as the son served in Iraq during the 2003 combat.
Anthony Wade earned an honorable mention from BCA with his “What Happened at Easter?” feature story. And the staff won an honorable mention in the overall state Baptist newspaper category.
The staff also earned an honorable mention from ACP for its coverage of the 2003 Alabama Baptist State Convention annual meeting.
During the state convention, a readership survey was taken about people’s favorite Christmas carol. The result of that survey was another honorable mention from ACP, this time for “What’s Your Favorite Christmas Carol?” in the “Reader Reaction” category.
Grace Thornton, Web manager and advertising associate for The Alabama Baptist, represented the staff at Religion Communicators Council (RCC).
She won an award of merit for her news story “FBC Citronelle Burns.”
Other Alabama Baptists also brought home awards from BCA and RCC.
-Samford University won awards from RCC. Philip Poole won an award of excellence for the “From Corinth to Beeson” CD cover and an award of merit for the “Admission Recruiting” CD cover.
-The Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions earned six awards from BCA.
