“This budget is just a guide,” observed State Board of Missions (SBOM) Chairman Mike Shaw. “But think of all the lives that are going to be changed if we reach the budget.”
Shaw, pastor of First Baptist Church, Pelham, was speaking to members of the SBOM immediately following their unanimous approval of a record $43.925 million Cooperative Program (CP) budget for 2007. State Board members also approved a challenge budget of $44.925 million, which includes $400,000 in designated giving for Alabama Baptist causes, during their Aug. 18 meeting at the Baptist Building in Montgomery.
The proposed budget now goes to the Nov. 14–15 meeting of the Alabama Baptist State Convention for approval.
The proposed budget represents a 3 percent increase over the 2006 CP budget. It also maintains the division between state and national causes of 57.7 percent for Alabama Baptist missions causes and 42.3 percent for Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) causes.
In presenting the proposed budget, Executive Director Rick Lance said Alabama Baptists are committed to presenting a “reachable base budget” to allow specific departments, as well as state and national entities, to plan on a dependable level of support.
He also praised Alabama Baptists for their support of SBC causes, saying during the last five years, Alabama has been the second largest contributor to missions causes through the SBC.
