The executive committee of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM) elected J. Marcus Merritt as associate in the office of evangelism Aug. 17.
Among his responsibilities will be coordination of the ALONE strategy, a method of evangelism designed specifically for bivocational pastors, as well as involvement with the Intentional Evangelism emphasis and the annual Crossover evangelistic effort preceding the annual meeting of the Alabama Baptist State Convention.
“Marc Merritt is an exceptional Christian leader who will add even more spiritual depth and personal commitment to our state missions staff,” said Rick Lance, SBOM executive director. “He is an effective pastor and gifted communicator who practices personal evangelism, as well as preaches evangelistically. Marc will be used by the Lord as he works among Alabama Baptists in Great Commission ministries.”
Sammy Gilbreath, SBOM director of evangelism, added, “I’m delighted to have Marc Merritt join Mike Jackson and me in the evangelism office. Marc’s special gifts of preaching and teaching will strengthen the evangelism office as we continue to partner with Alabama Baptist churches to develop a strategy to lead Alabama to Christ.”
Since 2000, Merritt has been senior pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church, Ranburne, in Cleburne Baptist Association.
Prior to that, Merritt served two churches in Georgia. Merritt attended Samford University’s Beeson Divinity School and is currently enrolled in Luther Rice Seminary in Lithonia, Ga.
He and his wife, Michelle, have three children and one grandchild. (SBOM)
