Alabama Baptist disaster relief teams have responded more in 2008 than in the last few years put together, said Tommy Puckett, state disaster relief director.
“We’re hitting it on all cylinders every month this year,” Puckett said.
At press time, Alabama Baptist teams were continuing cleanup and recovery work in Texas in the wake of Hurricane Ike.
More disaster relief teams — made up of volunteers from Elmore, Colbert-Lauderdale, Chilton, Salem-Troy, Walker, Bethel, Selma and Hale Baptist associations — were set to head out within the week to continue the work.
“The cleanup and recovery work in Texas will pretty much be wrapping up over the next 10 days,” Puckett said.
At press time, in Louisiana, mudout teams from Alabama had pulled out but were on standby for possible return.
“We’re not sure yet whether or not we will go back in there,” he said.
Meanwhile teams are responding to victims of a tornado that hit Enterprise Oct. 8. Teams from Montgomery, Coffee and Columbia Baptist associations went in Oct. 9 to do chain-saw cleanup and recovery work in a four- or five-block area behind city hall.
Puckett anticipated them to finish that work by Oct. 10. “The damage there wasn’t nearly as severe as the tornado that hit there [in 2007].” (TAB)
