Tallasahatchie Baptist Church, Alpine, dedicated two new historical markers, one for the church and one for the nearby Tallasahatchie Cemetery, during its homecoming celebration July 26. The church was formed April 27, 1833, and the ‘meeting house’ was completed in 1837. Tallasahatchie Baptist was a founding member of the Coosa River Baptist Association and the mother church to seven churches, including First Baptist Church, Sylacauga; Winterboro Baptist Church, Alpine; and Sycamore Baptist Church. The Tallasahatchie Cemetery holds more than 1,000 graves, some dating as far back as 1840.
