Tannehill Valley Baptist Church held inaugural services Feb. 10 at new facilities located on Tannehill Parkway in McCalla, capping a building project that began with what was noted as a remarkable step of faith.
The church, formerly known as Bucksville Baptist, has undergone many changes over the past decade. The transformation began with a name change in 1991 to Tannehill Valley Baptist Church when the surrounding area became known as Tannehill. Pastor Jon Reaves, who has served as pastor for 14 years, shared a vision early in his tenure of how the church could reach the community. In order to fulfill their mission of “placing the heart of God in the hearts of people,” they had to be willing to step out in faith and make sacrifices for future generations. And step out they did, though the church was small, averaging only 45 people in Sunday School at the time.
As a part of their commitment, the church built a family life/education center in 1993 to make room for children and teenagers in the area. In 1997 the family life center was converted into the worship center. After a period of rapid growth in the community, the church also grew and began to hold two morning services to allow room for all the attenders to worship. The church body knew that this was only a temporary fix to a wonderful problem. In faith, they purchased 15 acres of land on Tannehill Parkway. A stewardship program names “Catch the Vision- Build the Dream” was announced, and the people willingly sacrificed in order to provide the financial means for building and relocating the church to Tannehill Parkway. In May 2000, ground breaking ceremonies were held at the new property.
And Feb. 10, with 600 in attendance, the church’s vision became a reality. Pastor Reaves preached a message titled “Great Beginnings.” As he began his sermon with a look at creation, Reaves reminded the crowd that God created light first.
