Teen-pregnancy rates see continual decrease

BALTIMORE — Fewer teenagers are having babies according to the KIDS COUNT report. The report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found teen-pregnancy rates fell from 49 per 1,000 females in 1999 to 42 per 1,000 in 2003, the latest year for which official numbers were available.

Linda Klepacki, analyst for sexual health with Focus on the Family Action, said it’s part of a longer trend. “We’ve seen a continual decrease in teen-pregnancy rates and teen-delivery rates since 1991.”

She said abstinence education has had the greatest impact. “Research has shown over and over again (that) abstinence-until-marriage education is the factor that has decreased the rate the most.”  (TAB)
