The Browns

River of Love
Independent

The Browns are carrying on that most typical of southern gospel traditions — a family singing together. Mom Shelly sings lead, daughters Jessica and Michaela sing soprano and alto, respectively, while son Adam sings baritone and, according to their Web site, youngest member Andrew sings “any part he wants.” The group was a Top 5 finalist for Singing News Fan Awards’ Horizon Group of the Year.

“River Of Love,” the group’s third release, is well produced by Roger Talley, with Lauren Talley serving as vocal producer — the sound is full and harmonies are strong, as would be expected with those two handling the duties.

The album kicks off with “Count It All Joy” by Daryl Williams and Marty Funderburk,  showcasing the family harmonies to great effect.

That is followed by the Browns’ current single, “My Name Is Already There,” a traditional ballad about one of the genre’s favorite topics — getting to heaven someday. Shelly Brown provides a smooth lead vocal with a pleasant tone.

The rest of the album is a mix of traditional and progressive southern gospel.

Some of the standout tracks include “I See Two,” with its up-tempo country flavor; the title track, “River of Love,” which has some pretty mandolin touches; and a cover of Dottie Rambo’s “New Shoes,” which is a toe-tapping delight.

“River of Love” is worth seeking out if you particularly enjoy family harmony.

It is an independent project, but you can order it from the Browns on their Web site at www.thebrownfamilysings.com.
