It seems like most of the Christmas movies I have watched this season start out with a main character whose life revolves around work. Brace yourself — here comes another one. Based on a true story, “The Christmas Choir” is about a workaholic who is in the process of contemplating his life choices when he meets a homeless man. The association eventually leads him to reach into his musical background and start a choir for residents of a homeless shelter.
Also as in most Christmas movies the main character may be the one who benefited most from his efforts — not financially but in other, less definable ways. The movie has a good, solid message and is well done.
What bothered me about the movie is the almost complete absence of anything connected to the reason for Christmas. In fact the back of the video described the main character’s epiphany as the realization that “Christmas is not a season but a state of mind.” Hmmm … did I miss something? Wasn’t there something about a baby’s birth and a promise for mankind? Well the choir did sing Christmas hymns. I guess that’s something.
