The Dills

Uncommon
Brookfield Music Group

Wayne Haun, Joel Lindsey, Cindi Ballard, Rebecca J, Peck, John Lemonis, Mike Payne, Ray Davis, Marty Funderburk, Twila LaBar — with an all-star songwriting line-up that includes these names, you might be tempted to think you’ve just picked up the latest CD by one of gospel music’s biggest artists. Guess again.

The Dills are the beneficiaries of these songwriters and a handful of other talented tunesmiths, and without taking anything away from the Dills’ talent and performances, it’s almost impossible not to have a fine recording when the songs come the pens of such greats. This Jackson, Tenn., family knows a good thing when they see it, and when they realized the songs they had chosen to record were of such high caliber, they took the opportunity to put their heart and soul into the work that resulted in “Uncommon.”

Certainly one of the better rising groups of what gospel music, brothers Shawn and Tim Dill (along with their wives, LeeAnn and Bridget, respectively) have put together a unit that is not only getting the attention of the other performing artists, but of the national audience as well.

If “Uncommon” is just the beginning of what this group can do, gospel music is in for a treat. Sure, there’s room for improvement, but then again, no artist can claim perfection. Standout songs on this nine-song collection include “The Closer I Get to the Cross,” “I Carried His Cross,” “God Will Go” and “To Worship You.” (By Danny Jones)
