On the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe vs. Wade, pregnancy resource centers across the state are reporting increased interest in the work they do.
Day-to-day operations for these centers include managing phone calls, office visits, counseling sessions, parenting classes and medical aid, while coping with the rising cost of maternity items and assistance provided to their clients. One way Alabama drivers can help is through the Choose Life auto tag.
The Choose Life tag costs an additional $50 to purchase annually. Of that cost, $41.25 goes to support pregnancy resource centers and the rest goes to the state. Since the tag’s inception in 2003, $4.4 million has been distributed to PRCs around the state. About 6,000 tags are sold annually, generating about $250,000 per year.
Many have no clue what takes place in one of these centers. A scared, abortion-minded walks in wanting a free pregnancy test. Life and death hang in the balance. Volunteers and staff members experience a roller coaster of emotions all day as they seek to help these women.
‘Missionaries all over the state’
Pregnancy resource centers are like having missionaries sprinkled geographically all over the state. They offer free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, counseling and help with resources. In many cases, they host baby showers for women who are set to give birth and give them maternity supplies to set up a nursery. Most importantly, they give these women unconditional love.
Choose Life Alabama (Alabama Prolife Coalition Education Fund, Inc.) is a low-overhead, high-impact nonprofit. The board of directors and everyone associated with the work are volunteers. We have a part-time executive director, who also works full time as director of a pregnancy resource center.
