The Invitation: The Not-so-simple Truth About Following Jesus

The Invitation: The Not-so-simple Truth About Following Jesus

Greg Sidders. Grand Rapids, Mich.: Revell, 2011. 160 pp. (Paperback).

Greg Sidders became a Christian as a sophomore in college and discovered that he hadn’t bargained for all that Christianity demanded of him. Reading the words of Jesus — the ones in red in Sidders’ Bible — shocked him. What a radical Jesus was! He compared his Bible to others, hoping that his was defective in some way. The other Bibles, to his dismay, said the same things. He decided to avoid the Gospels.

That didn’t last long. Drawn back into what Sidders described as “the red zone,” he set out to find answers to his questions about what Jesus really meant by His invitation to follow Him. This book is the result.

In an engaging conversational style, Sidders examines Jesus’ teachings and what they mean to 21st-century Christians, looking at issues like whether discipleship is an option, what Christlike love looks like in the world today and how you plug in to real power. Sidders does not hold back, but challenges the reader with the question that caused him to embark on his quest: How can I call myself a Christian if I don’t follow Christ?

Sidders, a former journalist, is currently senior pastor of a church in Maine.
