In light of the Ken Ham/Bill Nye debate in February, a review of another of Ham’s recent books seemed in order. Targeting adult readers, the book answers more than 30 questions people might have about the creation/evolution debate. Questions include whether the Bible depends on a young earth, whether there are transitional forms in the fossil record and whether we should be concerned about climate change.
Ham is the editor; the questions are answered by different people with advanced degrees and impressive backgrounds. While a few of the questions are too esoteric for me (I have no idea what a “distant starlight model” is), most are very reader-friendly and interesting — even helpful.
One example is the idea of creation myths and great flood legends. Most cultures have their own versions, and this fact is often used by atheists to denigrate biblical ideas. The book points out that, rather than weakening the biblical position, the existence of other stories does just the opposite. The idea that our ancient ancestors were all familiar with the stories of creation and the great flood when they began to speak other languages fits perfectly with the biblical view of history.
Rather than taking a position and doggedly trying to force the facts to fit it, the book is thoughtful and candid, admitting when the answer is not clear and pointing out issues about which creationists do not agree. All in all, a very enlightening read.
