Think: The Life of the Mind and the Love of God

John Piper. Wheaton, Ill.: Crossway Books, 2010. 224 pp. (Hardback).

John Piper describes his latest book as “a plea to embrace serious thinking as a means of loving God and people.” He calls for a rejection of “either-or” thinking when it comes to “head and heart, thinking and feeling, reason and faith.” Instead, he says, it should be “both-and.”

Piper presents a surprising number of Bible verses that admonish the reader to think, consider and seek wisdom. The author takes the reader through a process, carefully developing his argument for thinking deeply about God and the Scriptures, giving the reader a glimpse into his own mind as he ponders biblical revelation. Two chapters are devoted to explaining and warning against relativism; as the author points out, thinking is futile if there is no absolute truth to know.

“Think” is pure Piper: challenging both in style and message. The author pulls no punches, demanding full engagement of the heart and mind.
