Pineview Baptist Church, Thomasville, commemorated its 50th anniversary July 29 by remembering its beginnings while looking toward the future. “It was a blessed day,” said Hazel Parden, one of the charter members of Pineview Baptist.
The service began with a slideshow presentation reminiscing on the church’s journey from being housed in a mattress factory to its current building, in addition to displays of charter member documents and past issues of the church’s newspaper. A prerecorded video presentation by Sheldon Day, mayor of Thomasville, was then shown, as he was unable to be present for the service.
Following the video and slideshow presentations was the reading of four celebratory proclamations from Sen. Jeff Sessions, the Alabama House of Representatives, the Alabama Senate and the U.S. Senate. Each of the proclamations noted the contributions Pineview has made to Thomasville through its service and commitment “to be a lighthouse on the hilltop to the glory of God.”
Thomasville Baptist Church Pastor Tyrone Parten, who attended Pineview as a child, spoke about the mission of the church from Acts 1:8 to an audience of more than 300. John Reid presented a plaque on behalf of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission. The service was followed by a covered dish lunch on the grounds.
Mitch Thrower, pastor of Pineview, hopes the church continues to be active in the next 50 years. “We’re striving to be a missions-minded church,” Thrower said. In accordance with that goal, Pineview sent teams on summer missions trips to Michigan and Tennessee. Thrower said he hopes the church will eventually have missions trips throughout the year.
