One current professor and two retired professors from Southern Baptist seminaries died in June and July.
David Garland, distinguished professor emeritus of Old Testament and Hebrew at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, died July 21.
Garland, 83, taught at the seminary from 1958 to 1991. He also served as a pastor in several states.
Retired New Testament professor of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., James Blevins died July 24. He was 67.
A native of Hot Coal, W. Va., Blevins was professor of New Testament interpretation at Southern Seminary when he retired. He began his teaching career at Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C. as a professor of religion 1969-1974.
Blevins was the author of several books.
Gary Pearson, a faculty member at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, Calif., died June 29 at the age of 62.
Pearson served as director of theological field education and was professor of ministry at the seminary for 13 years. He also was serving as Golden Hills Baptist Association’s director of missions.
