NAMUTUMBA DISTRICT, Uganda — A Muslim relative sprayed family members with acid, and Muslim hardliners beat a former mosque leader in Uganda, all for becoming Christians.
In Intonko village on March 8, three members of the same family — Juma Waiswa; his wife, Nasimu Naigaga; and their teen daughter, Amina Nagudi — were sprayed with acid by Waiswa’s father. Waiswa, his wife and daughter had put their faith in Jesus Christ in February, reported Morning Star News.
The three fled the attack. Waiswa and Naigaga were taken to a hospital in Mbale, but Nagudi required specialized care at a hospital in Jinja. While the three were hospitalized, their house was set on fire March 9.
On March 13, Swaleh Mulongo was beaten after leaving a worship site in Iganga, which is also in Namutumba District. He sustained head wounds, a broken wrist and bruises. Mulongo, a former imam, had put his faith in Jesus Christ in January, Morning Star News reported.
Uganda’s laws and constitution allow freedom of religion, including converting from one faith to another. Muslims comprise no more than 12% of Uganda’s population.
