Some have felt that the musical evolution of dc Talk has caused the trio to rely more upon the vocal talent of Michael Tait and Kevin Max and less upon the rap/hip-hop influences of Toby Mc-
Keehan (tobyMac). But with the release of his solo project, “Momentum,” tobyMac reveals that he is still the innovator behind dc Talk’s music.
“Momentum” is the final piece to the dc Talk solo trilogy. It is perhaps the most energetic and diverse of the solo albums by each of the group’s members. “Momentum” is a conglomeration of hip-hop, rock, funk and R&B. tobyMac opens the album with the track “Get This Party Started” and picks up momentum from that point on. From the hip-hop tracks like “Irene” and “Wonderin’ Why” to the rap core sounds of “Yours” and “Extreme Days,” tobyMac flexes his musical muscle on every track. A highlight of the album is “J Train” featuring Kirk Franklin.
By recording a solo project, tobyMac hoped to explore his personal musical identity apart from dc Talk. “Momentum” reveals not only a diversity of musical styles, but it also reveals tobyMac’s commitment to breaking down social and ethnic barriers among the people of God. He hopes to continue encouraging the members of the Christian community to love one another without bias.
