MEXICO CITY — Some authorities have forbidden evangelicals to enter their towns or visit evangelical churches in nearby towns. Three Christian men, Gregorio, Epigmenio and Marcelino Escobar — all with the same last name although not related — were tortured and jailed from June 22 to 24. The men were freed only after much pressure from the Abundant Life Christian Fraternity to which they belong. They were told that any return to the evangelical church would result in the confiscation of their lands and houses. Their pastor, Francisco Hernandez Sanchez, was threatened with death if he enters the area.
According to the president of the Abundant Life group, Gregorio Gonzalez Nava, the problem in Cuatecometl and surrounding towns began four years ago when the first five or six families accepted the gospel.
