Do you ever worry about the teaching your child or grandchild might be exposed to in college? I did and I did what I could as a parent to make sure they knew the truth before they got away from my influence. It worked (one is a minister and the other is active in church), but I would have loved to have “Truth Matters” to share with them at that time.
The authors of this fairly small volume have done an excellent job of presenting the information taught by one religion professor, then refuting it with some strong arguments of their own. Bart Ehrman, who teaches full time at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and serves as adjunct professor at Duke University in Durham, N.C., is well-known for his attacks on Christianity. The authors point out there are many others like him around the country, undermining the faith that many of the students brought with them to college.
The authors speak directly to students in the book, using direct and clear language that does not “talk down” but offers evidence in terms a person who may not be especially well-versed in theology can easily understand. I consider myself fairly well-versed and I learned quite a bit from this volume.
There also is a leader guide available for youth leaders of students in grades 7–12 who want to help build their students’ defenses against assault from those who would lead them astray. I plan to give copies of this book as graduation gifts this year. It could change the course of a young person’s life.
