In the aftermath of severe storms that unleashed rain, tornadoes and high winds on several areas of the state April 30, only two Alabama Baptist churches reported damage.
Bradleyton Baptist Church in Alabama Crenshaw Association and East Chapman Baptist Church in Butler Association both suffered damage, according to the associations’ directors of missions (DOM).
Jody Bentley, DOM for Alabama-Crenshaw Association, said a tree fell on Bradleyton during a severe thunderstorm that came through the area.
East Chapman Baptist Church, Chapman, suffered some minor roof damage during a severe storm that could have included a tornado, said DOM Jim Griffin. Neither DOM reported any injuries or deaths.
Tommy Puckett, director of disaster relief for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, said a disaster-relief assessment team visited Chapman to see if residents needed help. Two families requested assistance so a cleanup/recovery crew from Vaughn Forest Baptist Church, Montgomery, was slated to go help them May 7.
This was the only request for disaster relief to which his office had been asked to respond, Puckett said.
The April 30 storms spawned two F-0 tornadoes in Shelby County and possible tornadoes in Clarke County as well as straight-line winds in many areas of the state.
