Two people are dead and another is injured after a shooter entered a “Boomers Potluck” dinner at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, this evening (Thursday, June 16).
Capt. Shane Ware of the Vestavia Hills Police Department said the suspect is in custody and the victim who survived is being treated at a local hospital. VHPD and the Vestavia Hills Fire Department responded to the call about an active shooter at 6:22 p.m.
Ware will hold his next briefing at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow (Friday, June 17).
Eric Spivey, pastor of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, said in a Facebook post that news of the tragedy reached his church as their VBS wrap-up event was closing and families and friends were able to leave safely.
“We grieve tonight with our sisters and brothers of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church after this evening’s senseless shooting,” he said. “We stand with our community — sister churches, first responders and emergency medical personnel as they care for those experiencing the trauma of today.”
