U.S. Jews, Arabs united on Palestinian statehood

WASHINGTON — Despite two years of escalating violence in the Middle East, the overwhelming majority of Arab Americans and Jewish Americans in a recent survey agreed Palestinians and Israelis have the right to their own independent states.

According to a survey taken last month and released Nov. 21 by the Arab American Institute and Americans for Peace Now, 85 percent of Jewish Americans said they supported the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Meanwhile, 95 percent of Arab Americans said Israelis have the right to live in a secure and independent state of their own.

The poll, conducted by Zogby International, surveyed 500 people representing a broad cross section of Arab Americans and Jewish Americans — not just those from Palestine or Israel — and included religious and secular Muslims, Jews and Christians. The poll had a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.
