The University of Mobile (UM) has been named among “America’s 100 Best College Buys” by Institutional Research & Evaluation (IR&E) Inc., an independent research and consulting organization.
UM is one of only four schools in Alabama and the only private university in the state listed in the 2009–10 report. Also named were Auburn University, the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
“Consistent with its mission, and as a guide by which institutions may be compared, each year Institutional Research & Evaluation Inc. identifies the 100 American colleges and universities providing students the very highest quality education at the lowest cost,” wrote Lewis T. Lindsey Jr., president of IR&E, in the organization’s 14th annual report.
UM President Mark Foley said he is pleased the school is named among the top buys for higher education in the nation.
“This puts a spotlight on our university as we set our sights on our goal of becoming a national leader in the revitalization of Christian faith and character in America,” Foley said. “The University of Mobile has developed a unique educational culture based upon integration of learning, faith and leadership.”
IR&E surveyed 1,451 accredited U.S. colleges and universities offering four-year undergraduate degree programs that provided facilities for both room and board. Of those, 1,195 schools responded.
To be considered for the designation “America’s 100 Best College Buys,” an institution must be an accredited four-year institution offering bachelor’s degrees; offer full residential facilities including residence halls and dining services; have had an entering freshman class in fall 2008 with a high school grade point average and/or SAT/ACT score equal to or above the national average for entering college freshmen; and have an out-of-state cost of attendance in 2009–10 for three quarters or two semesters below the national average cost of attendance, or not exceeding the national average cost by more than 10 percent.
