UM receives $50,000 grant

The University of Mobile (UM) has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Crampton Trust, according to Mike Blaylock, vice president for institutional advancement at UM. The grant will help fund the purchase of a $1.1 million computer system designed to manage student information. The new computer system will allow students to register, pay tuition and access account information online; increase the efficiency of faculty to advise students, assign homework and record grades; generate student transcripts and reports within minutes of the request; and provide a central database for administrative and student information.

“The original system was designed for a college with an enrollment of about 500. While we’ve made modifications to that system over the years, it simply can’t meet the needs of a growing university with an enrollment of 2,000” Blaylock said.

The new system will be fully operational in January 2004.
