University of Mobile (UM) faculty and staff encourage students to change the world. Students at UM put that lesson into practice to clean the streets of Prichard during Project Serve the City.
The service project involved approximately 100 students, primarily freshmen, who worked with the Prichard Public Works Department to pick up litter in various areas of the city. The event was part of the university’s Campus Outreach and Ram Rush student orientation activities.
“The reason that we do Project Serve is because we as Christians have a call to minister to the people in the area we live,” said Lee Harper, a campus life coordinator at UM. “Project Serve is an opportunity for new college students to serve their new home.”
Dustin Lee, a senior majoring in business management and a Campus Outreach coordinator, said, “Changing the world doesn’t just start overseas; it starts next door. We want to change the world, starting with our neighbor.”
Lee said the event introduces new students to the Campus Outreach program at the university, which coordinates monthly service projects throughout the community.
“This is not a one-time event,” Lee said. “Serving one another and our community is a way of life.”
Megan Hunter, a senior majoring in psychology and a Campus Outreach coordinator, added, “This event helps the freshmen and transfer students build relationships with each other, and it gets across an important theme for our university — changing lives to change the world.” (UM)
