UMobile students use musical gifts to ‘further the Kingdom’

University of Mobile (UMobile) assistant professor of music Kenn Hughes not only teaches music, he also teaches students how to use their musical gifts on the missions field.

He traveled with UMobile students to Jamaica during winter break in 2012, and during summer break 2013 he traveled to Brazil to serve again.

“My highlight was sharing this experience with these students and watching them develop a love for missions through their giftedness, knowing that it will change their lives forever,” Hughes said.

The team of three students and Hughes visited two Brazilian cities, Brasilia and Maceio, from June 21 to July 2. They traveled alongside Metro Big Band, a group of jazz musicians who travel around the world to help Global Missions Project, a nonprofit music missions ministry based in Georgia.

“I believe I’m opening my heart more to the calling God has placed on my heart to use the talents He has given me to further the Kingdom,” said Megan Ramsey, a 2013 graduate of UMobile. “The biggest blessing to me was the way I was able to communicate with those sound engineers and being able to see (that) their passion for technical excellence matched my passion.”

Sophomore Christopher James from Pensacola, Fla., and freshman Chris Rowell from Palmer, Alaska, journeyed with the group. James specializes in drums while Rowell plays the tenor saxophone.

The missions trip was one of the opportunities students have through the UMobile Center for Performing Arts/School of Music and School of Worship Leadership.
