The University of Mobile’s (UM) popular StarLight outdoor music festival will be presented every other year instead of annually, as student performing groups spend more time on the road representing the private Christian university, said Roger Breland, director of the UM Center for Performing Arts (CPA).
“The primary reason we created StarLight was to increase the visibility of the Center for Performing Arts in the local area, then use that as a launching point to extend our reach throughout the region,” he said. “The strategy has worked so well that CPA groups are presenting concerts every week, from churches and schools to regional and national conferences. The expanded touring schedule gives our students valuable experience performing a wide range of musical styles in a variety of venues and is part of the preparation they need for success in their careers.”
Breland said the success of the touring schedule, coupled with a desire not to overtax faculty and students with too many major productions in a short period, led to the decision to present the StarLight concert on alternate years. He said StarLight, which had been scheduled for April 11, will be presented next in April 2007. (UM)
