University of Mobile homecoming unites students, alumni

The University of Mobile’s (UM) campus was bustling with activity Feb. 8–10 as alumni joined with current and prospective students to celebrate homecoming.

UM’s 1967 charter class reunited; the 2002 court, king and queen were announced; and high school juniors and seniors experienced a taste of college life at UM’s Ram Jam.

Alumni from all classes returned with family and friends for Rams’ athletic events, annual alumni meeting, children’s games, barbecue dinner and a chapel service led by founding president and current chancellor William K. Weaver Jr. The class of ’67 met for brunch at UM’s newly renovated Donald Gallery in Martin Hall. Former UM men’s and women’s soccer team members played alumni games.

During the alumni meeting, Dianne Kennedy, chairman of the alumni association, was honored for her outstanding service and commitment to the institution.

Kennedy, who graduated in 1991 with a bachelor of science in business administration, is executive vice president and branch manager of SouthTrust Bank in Mobile. She is a member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church, Mobile, where she served as a trustee and member of the finance committee. She also served on the boards of directors for Cottage Hill Christian School and the Mobile branch of the American Cancer Society.

At the Sunday morning service at Lyon Chapel, Weaver delivered a message and past members of the alumni choir performed under the direction of retired professor of music Kenneth Bergdolt.

Current students celebrated homecoming with UM men’s and women’s basketball games; a UM baseball game at Hank Aaron Stadium; a midnight prayer, praise and worship service; and a barbecue dinner with friends and alumni.

Homecoming court members were honored at a reception and were presented during halftime of the men’s basketball game Saturday night, at which the homecoming king and queen were announced.

April Brock of Prattville was chosen to be UM’s homecoming queen. She is the daughter of Glenn and Carol Brock of Prattville, where Glenn serves as pastor of Camellia Baptist Church. A senior majoring in elementary education, April will graduate in May and work this summer at Project Hope in Montgomery.

Ben Finch of Athens, Tenn., was named king. Son of Ralph and Carol Finch, Ben is a senior soccer player majoring in religion and leading worship for college and youth at the Faith Family Fellowship in Spanish Fort.

More than 150 prospective students participated in Ram Jam. The weekend commenced Friday afternoon with inflatable games, rock climbing and a scavenger hunt to introduce the students to UM’s campus. The high school students joined current students for Midnight Praise and spent the night in campus housing. Saturday morning’s expo gave them a chance to meet with UM students and professors to discuss interests and the prospect of attending UM.
