After two well-received EPs (shortened albums) and years of touring with folks like Big Daddy Weave and Sanctus Real, Unspoken has released its first full-length album on Centricity Music. The new self-titled record, “Unspoken,” is already making some pretty big waves with singles “Start A Fire,” written by Jon Lowry, and “Who You Are.” Another song that is getting plenty of attention is “Call It Grace,” penned by lead singer Chad Mattson and described by guitarist Mike Gomez as “the song I wish I had written.” Another song that grabbed my attention is a fairly stark blues number, “Bury the Workman,” which presents the simple message that you can kill God’s workman, but His work will go on.

The band has come a long way since its beginning 11 years ago in the Dominican Republic where lead singer Mattson had retreated on a church-building missions trip to battle drug and alcohol addiction. There he met Gomez and both returned to Mattson’s native Maine to continue crafting their music. Soon multi-instrumentalist and writer Lowry and drummer/percussionists Ariel Munoz joined the band, and things began to gel. While their music might properly be labeled pop the diverse blending of styles from Maine, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic gives the band a unique sound.

More than a decade of work has produced a well-rounded, mature band and this first full-length CD is not your typical starting effort. Recommended.
