Virginia bill to allow ‘moment of silence’

Public schools in Virginia will be permitted to require a moment of silence to start the school day under a bill approved 28-11 by the State Senate Feb. 1.

The bill, part of an effort to reduce violence in schools, is expected to pass the House and become law. Virginia Gov. James Gilmore, a Republican, called the proposal “a good way to help instill character.” (EP)
