Walmart, Jesus and You: Discovering the Gospel in Everyday Living

Joey Rich. Charleston, S.C.: Joey Rich, 2013. 216 pp. (Paperback).

Joey Rich was named Bivocational Pastor of the Year by the Alabama Baptist State Convention in 2010. After reading “Walmart, Jesus and You,” it begins to come clear why he was graced with this honor.

The book consists of a series of vignettes that first tell a story (or stories) on a topic, then relate the teachings of Jesus to the topic and end with what it all means to you, the reader. The title entry, for example, describes a trip to Walmart where the author encountered frustration (surprise!) and a change of plans, then followed it with examples of people in the Bible whose plans were changed — Saul, Peter  and Moses, to name a few. The final segment questions the reader, “Change is inevitable. When changes in your plans are necessary, you will have to make a decision concerning where you place your trust. Your plans or God’s plans? Which will it be?”

Rich is minister of education at First Baptist Church, Moody, in St. Clair Baptist Association.
