James Walters, recently retired pastor of First Baptist Church, Mobile, died May 22. He was 68.
Walters, who retired from the church at the end of 2006 after 22 years, found out just days after retirement that he suffered from a malignant brain tumor.
A Troy native, Walters received a preaching license during his senior year of high school.
He later earned a bachelor’s degree from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, master’s degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and doctorate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Prior to his pastorate at First, Mobile, Walters served as pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Pinson; First Baptist Church, Opp; and First Baptist Church, Clanton, as well as assistant pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Louisville, Ky., and First Baptist Church, Montgomery.
He also served in different roles with all three of the state’s Baptist institutions of higher learning.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah; a daughter; and two grandchildren. (TAB)
