Want to know God?

South Roebuck Baptist, Birmingham

More than a decade ago, a video about the plight of children in orphanages began a passion in my heart to bring an orphaned child into our family. Carol and I resolved that our first child would be an orphan needing a Christian family.

After eight years of marriage, we began our journey to become adoptive parents. After selecting a reputable adoption agency, our interest was drawn to a female infant from an orphanage in Taipei, Taiwan. Before we were matched with a child — even before the process was initiated — we began praying for our future daughter by name. We named her Lauren.

When we landed at the airport in Birmingham with 5-month-old Lauren, we were greeted by a host of supporters who had encouraged us during the adoptive process. She is a special child, belonging to a larger family of friends who is investing in her future.

Do you realize that there are “orphans” who are not in orphanages or foster homes? You may be a “spiritual orphan.” Until you are adopted into God’s family, you have yet to experience the benefits of being a child of God. Every moment you remain outside of His family, His heart is broken by your plight. He longs to be your heavenly Father. The Bible says, “His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ” (Eph. 1:5).

Adoption into God’s family entitles you to special privileges. You bear the family name. Being called a “Christian” is the highest honor. With that honor comes a sense of belonging and purpose that makes life fulfilling. A child of God is a recipient of a great spiritual inheritance. Each child adopted into God’s family becomes an heir to His Kingdom. Your physical inheritance will not last. Yet your spiritual family heirlooms will be waiting on you in God’s Kingdom.

God has completed His part of the adoptive process. A new family awaits all who will finalize the adoption by becoming a Christian. Will you become a part of God’s family?

By faith in Jesus Christ, you will belong to an eternal family — God’s family.
