We live in an age of depersonalization. We are a credit card to the gas station, an account holder to the bank and a charge account holder to the department store. The improvements of technology don’t answer our longing for meaning and peace.
It has been said the elevator is a picture of our world today. You get crammed in with people you have never met, try hard not to touch them and few ever speak to one another except to name a floor.
As bad as it is, the prospect of feeling like a whole person for many is even more dismal when it comes to faith. If people are not easy to build relationships with, what chance do we have with God?
The truth is, if it were up to us it would be impossible. Alone we can’t build a bridge that far. But the message of the gospel is that God has come to us.
The Psalmist said it well: “O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up. You understand my thoughts from afar” (Ps. 139:1–2). God knows us best and cares for us the most. That’s just the opposite of the world.
With God there is no pretense or need to impress. Among the best-known verses in the Bible is John 3:16. It begins with “For God so loved …”
The life and ministry of Jesus bear out the love of God for every person. He cared, listened, served, supported, encouraged and affirmed. He touched as well as stayed in touch with people. God wants to do the same for each of us. Our failures were already anticipated and forgiveness offered when He sent His Son to the cross.
If you want to know God, consider how much He already loves you. Find a quiet place and reflect on the verses from Psalms and John. You will discover that God wanted the relationship with you long before you knew how much you needed one with Him.
Not only does God know you, He wants to show you a community of faith, a local church family with a personal touch rather than leave you as an island in a sea of indifference.
