Want to know God?

Westmeade Baptist Church, Decatur

Have you noticed some people are really loud and to get attention they get even louder? God can be loud if needed. He can shout into our life through circumstances, events and tragedies. He can make Himself known through hurts and pain. But most often when it comes to calling us to salvation and knowing Him, it is more in line with the way He spoke to Elijah. The Bible declares in 1 Kings 19:10–11, “And he said, ‘Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord.’ And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”

That is the way it is with most of us. God speaks with whispered tones. In the deep recesses of our mind, where no one knows but you and God, He speaks. It is so subtle that sometimes we question if the voice we heard was God or was our mind just playing tricks on us. His still small voice interrupts the routine of our lives, calls us to question our actions and to contemplate our future. God generally does not shout to call us to repentance. He does not scold us in a raised voice over our sin. He does not loudly call our name to our embarrassment in the midst of a crowd to correct us. He could, but He does not.

The Bible says in Romans 2:4 that it is the goodness of God that leads to repentance. It is His loving kindness that speaks His still small voice to our hearts, calling us out of darkness into His light. For some the image of God is the cosmic cop wanting to catch us in our sin and arrest us for all our wrongs. Nothing could be farther from the truth. He loved the whole world enough to send the most precious gift of all, His dear Son, to be our Savior, Redeemer.

Listen for His voice today. The writer of Hebrews declares in Hebrews 3:15, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” Do you hear Him?
